Redwood City Mesothelioma

REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Redwood City is the third largest city in San Mateo County, and the County seat. According to the 2022 Census data, Redwood City’s estimated population is 80,512. In the early 1900s, the U.S. and German governments conducted world climate surveys and found that Redwood City had one of the world’s three best climates – the other two cities were the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean Coast of North Africa.

The original inhabitants in the San Francisco Bay area, including Redwood City, were the Ohlone Native Americans. The Ohlone lived in approximately 50 diverse autonomous villages and did not speak the same language, however the Spaniards forced them to live and work together to maintain the Spanish missions.  Many Native Americans perished from exposure to  European diseases.

Redwood City resides on part of the 1854, 35,000 acre, Rancho de las Pulgas land grant.  The Rancho was originally granted to the Arguello family. In 1848, when Mexico ceded California to the United States, the U.S. government refused to recognize many of the Mexican government’s land grants, including the grant to the Arguello family. The Arguello family hired attorney Simon Mezes to defend their claim to the grant. Mr. Mezes was successful and the Arguello family gave Mr. Mezes 5250 acres of the Rancho which was next to the Redwood Creek.  Mr. Mezes divided the land into lots for sale and named the new settlement “Mezesville.”

In 1851, a deep-water channel was discovered off the San Francisco Bay, in what is now known as Redwood City, and it was named the Redwood Creek. Consequently, Redwood City has the only deep-water port in the South Bay. During the Gold Rush era, Redwood City was known as a Port town and its economic base was primarily, shipping lumber, grains and livestock to San Francisco and elsewhere, shipbuilding, and tannery.

In 1856, the California Legislature passed the Consolidation Act, which set apart all of the rural areas of San Francisco County into a new county designated as San Mateo County. In 1867, Redwood City incorporated and changed its name from Mezesville to Redwood City, reflecting its prosperous lumber transportation trade.

Since 1939, Redwood City has continuously held an Independence Day Parade. Today, Redwood City is mostly residential and commercial.  Although, it is close to Silicon Valley, it has its own High-Tech. businesses. It is home to Oracle, Poshmark, Informatica, Glint, Evermore, Go Fund Me, and many more tech companies.  Redwood City is also environmentally conscious as the city includes many parks and open spaces, such as the Blair Island Ecological Preserve, and the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge.
