RIALTO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of Rialto is located in Southern California, in San Bernardino County. The 2021, U.S. Census Bureau indicates that Rialto’s population is 103,545. Rialto is 4.7 miles from the city of San Bernardino, 14.8 miles from the city of Riverside, 56.8 miles from Los Angeles, and 69.5 miles from Long Beach. Rialto was incorporated as a city in 1911.

The indigenous people living in Rialto were the Serrano Indians.  Many early objects have been found in the area and confirm that the Serrano Indians lived in and near Rialto, from 1500 through 1800.

Per the U.S. Census bureau, Rialto is 24.09 square miles.  It is near the Cajon Pass, Riverside city, Colton and Fontana.  Rialto lies within a part of the 1842, Rancho San Bernardino land grant.  The Santa Fe Railroad built a line from San Bernardino to Pasadena in 1887.  Most people credit Rialto’s Methodist Colony for naming the city after the Rialto Bridge in Italy.

During World War II the United States Rialto Ammunition Storage Point used the site to store backup ammunition and weapons. The ammunition site closed in 1945.  The site was sold to defense contractors and other companies that manufactured rocket propellant, fireworks, pyrotechnics and ordnance. Unfortunately, the companies used Perchlorate salts and other Volatile Organic Compounds(VOC) which eventually contaminated the city’s drinking water.  The EPA added the Rialto Ammunition Site to the Superfund Program’s National Priorities List in 2009, and the EPA is in the process of cleaning Rialto’s groundwater.

In the 1900’s Rialto was rural and known for its vast orange groves.  Today, Rialto’s economy is based on various businesses, including warehousing consumer products and large distribution centers.  It is home to the Target Distribution Center, Kellogg’s APL Logistics, Staples Inc., Amazon, and LGE Electronics.
