Rocklin Mesothelioma

ROCKLIN, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Rocklin is located in Northern California, in Placer County. The United States Census Bureau estimated that in 2022, Rocklin’s population was 71,857.  Rocklin is situated 4 miles from Roseville, 21 miles from the city of Sacramento and about 105 miles from San Francisco. Rocklin was settled in the early 1800s, and initially was referred to as the Secret Ravine or Granite Quarries  It was incorporated as a city in 1893.

The indigenous people in the Rocklin area were the Maidu or Nisenan Indians.  The Maidu villages extended from the Sacramento Valley all the way to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  The Maidu name translates to “The People.”  The Maidu were hunters and gatherers and subsisted on acorns, nuts, berries, wild animals and fish.  In 1832, European trappers in the area brought malaria and other diseases that severely affected the Maidu Indians, because they had no immunity to the European diseases.  It is estimated that 50 to 75% of the native tribes perished from these diseases. In conjunction with the 1848, California Gold Rush, miners displaced the remaining tribes.

Rocklin was an important producer of granite products in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  The Granite quarries were vital to Rocklin’s economy.  In 1855, Rocklin supplied granite to San Francisco for construction of Fort Mason.  In the 1860s Rocklin also supplied granite for construction of the state capital building in Sacramento and granite blocks for railroad tunnels and culverts for the transcontinental railroad. Unfortunately, by 1930, many quarries shut down when cement-based concrete was used more frequently.  The last quarry in Rocklin closed in 2005.

The Chinese immigrant community was instrumental in building California and working for the Central Pacific Railroad in construction of the Transcontinental rail line.  In 1876, Northern California, including Rocklin had a large Chinese population.  In Rocklin, the Chinese residents lived and worked at the railroad roundhouse, grew and sold vegetables for the town and helped develop Whitney’s ranch.  However, in 1876, the Chinese community was forcibly removed by the town residents from Rocklin and surrounding area, due to the well documented instances of violence, discrimination, prejudice, and unethical federal and state laws. In 1907, the Southern Pacific Railroad moved its facilities from Rocklin, California to Roseville.  During World War II the rail yards performed major services for the United States Government and was a major employer in the region.

Today, Rocklin is a suburban community with many commuters to and from the Sacramento and San Francisco bay area. Also, several high-tech firms such as SMA America Production, LLC and Infinity Energy, Inc., have companies in Rocklin.

Rocklin is 4 miles from Roseville and is considered a part of the Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom Metropolitan Area.  A Metropolitan Area is a core area or major city with a large population center, that includes its suburban communities and nearby towns that have a high degree of economic and social influence with that core. Per the United States Census Data, in 2021, the population of the Sacramento-Roseville Folsom Metropolitan Area was about 2.41 million people.
