SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

San Clemente is located in the South Coast of California, in Orange County.  It is 61 miles from Los Angeles and about 60 miles from San Diego, CA.  According to the 2022 U.S. census data, an estimated 63,457 people make their home in San Clemente.  San Clemente was incorporated as a city on February 28, 1928.

The indigenous Acjachemen (also known as Juaneno), Gabrielino and Tongva Tribes all lived in Southern CA, and Orange County about 9000 thousand years before the Spaniards’ 1769 expedition.  The  Acjachemen territory stretched from Las Pulgas Creek in San Diego county up into the San Joaquin Hills along Orange County’s Central Coast, and inland from the Pacific Ocean up to the Santa Ana Mountains.  When the Spanish Friars established Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, the Friars named the indigenous Acjachemen natives “Juaneno.” The Juaneno- Acjachemen natives’ were decimated by the Spanish Mission System, European diseases, conflict with settlors and soldiers and forced removal to reservations or rancherias.

San Clemente lies on the California coast, half way between Los Angeles and San Diego and was originally only barren hills.  The city of San Clemente sits on a portion of Rancho Boca de la Playa, a land grant awarded to Emigdio Vejar in 1846.

In 1925, Ole Hansen, a former Seattle Mayor, along with H.H. Cotton and Thomas Murphine purchased 2000 acres that propelled Hansen’s vision of a “Spanish Village by the Sea.”  They sold lots averaging $300.00 and by 1928, about 1000 people lived in the area.  Hansen attached a clause to the original residents’ deeds, requiring white stucco exteriors and red tiled roofs that was eventually struck down, which ultimately allowed for a more diversified architectural style in San Clemente.

In 1926, San Clemente was one of the earliest planned communities in the United States. San Clemente was also a wealthy community because the lot owners publicly owned the amenities, including a public beach, a large municipal pier, a school, a golf course and parks and trails.  However, the 1929, stock market crash and resulting depression caused Hansen to lose his home known as Casa Romantica, along with a sixty percent population decline in San Clemente.  The population bounced back and now has over 63,000 residents in San Clemente. Also, Casa Romantica was rescued  by local activist from demolition and is now a Cultural Center and Gardens.

In 1969, President Richard Nixon bought H.H. Cotton’s mansion and named it “La Casa Pacifica” and it became known as the “Western White House.”  Many world leaders met with Nixon in San Clemente, including, Leonid Brezhnev from the Soviet Union, Mexican President Gustavo Diez Ordaz and others.  Today, San Clemente is a tourist destination and known for its mild climate, its trails, beaches and surfing locations.
