SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

San Francisco is located on a peninsula in Northern California, between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, one of the largest natural harbors on the Pacific.  San Francisco is the fourth largest city in California, with a population of 883,305.   It covers 46 square miles from the bay to a cluster of hills, including Twin Peaks, Mount Davidson, and Mount Sutro and then back to the Pacific Ocean.  The varied terrain influences local weather patterns, and produces the  stunning vistas that San Francisco is famous for.

Lying inside the San Francisco city limits are three large islands: Alcatraz, Yerba Buena and Treasure Island.   Treasure Island was created with fill dredged from the bay, and was the site of the 1939 World’s Fair.  Alcatraz served as a maximum-security prison from 1934-1963 and is now a popular tourist destination.

The Ramaytush Ohlone were indigenous to the San Francisco Peninsula. By 1776, permanent European settlements were established at the San Francisco Presidio and at Mission San Francisco de Asís. The Presidio marked the northernmost advance of the Spanish empire.

In 1849 the population of San Francisco grew from about 400 to 25,000 residents with the discovery of gold in the California foothills.  The period of rapid growth continued through 1859 with the discovery of silver in the Comstock Lode.

In 1906, a massive earthquake and subsequent fire that burned for 4 days destroyed much of the city. Its been estimated that 28,000 buildings with a value of $350 million were lost. The city and its people proved resilient- by 1915, San Francisco hosted the world at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition.  In 1937, the world’s eyes again turned to San Francisco, with the completion of the Bay Bridge, and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Today, San Francisco is a lively and diverse center for the arts, sports and culture, with local sports teams, galleries, restaurants, and museums attracting visitors from around the world. Considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, San Francisco has been immortalized in song, and on film.  With the rapid growth of the tech sector, San Francisco now has among the highest salaries, disposable income, and median home prices in the world.
