SAN LEANDRO CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

San Leandro is a diverse and multicultural city in Alameda County, in the San Francisco Bay Area of northern California. Nearly 90,000 people make their home in San Leandro. San Leandro is named after Leander of Seville, a sixth-century Spanish bishop.

Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of native Ohlone inhabited the lands near what is now known as San Leandro, sustained by the temperate climate and plentiful acorns, wild game and fish.

San Leandro had its origins as a land grant ranch.  After completing 17 years of military service, José Joaquin Estudillo was granted nearly 7,000 acres, including the land between San Leandro and San Lorenzo Creeks. In 1850, he built a home, and raised 11 children there.

San Leandro was devastated by a large earthquake in October 21, 1868,  when the Southern segment of the Hayward Fault ruptured. The quake, estimated to be a 6.8,  lasted for 40 seconds and was felt as far away as Nevada.  In San Leandro many buildings were destroyed,or were heavily damaged,  including its courthouse.

Like much of Alameda county, San Leandro’s agricultural roots ran deep, growing wheat, barley, corn, peas, tomatoes, apricots and especially cherries. In 1909, the town held its first cherry festival,  a tradition that continues today.  San Leandro became known as “ The Cherry City.” The central location and proximity to the Bay and to the railroads contributed to the growth of the food processing industry.  In 1899 the California Packing Company, later renamed Del Monte, established a cannery, and  processed and shipped pears, peaches apricots and other fruits and vegetables.  The facility employed as many as 1000 seasonal workers a years.  Food and beverage manufacturers still play a significant role in San Leandro’s economy, and today over 50 food and beverage manufacturers, including Drake’s Brewing Company, Coca Cola and Ghirardelli Chocolate Company operate out of  the city.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries two thirds of the town was Portuguese, and  San Leandro was called  “the Portuguese Capital of the West”.  Some immigrants arrived from the Portuguese Azores while others left Hawaii’s political unrest for a more stable future in California.

From 1940 to 1950, San Leandro experienced a large population explosion as migrants from across the country congregated in the Bay Area to support the war industry.  San Leandro’s  population doubled. By the 1970’s, the orchards and farmland had largely disappeared, replaced by housing.
