San Marcos’ economy in the 1800s was agricultural, and in the 1900s its economy expanded to dairy and poultry farms.

San Marco’s has a total area of 24.4 square miles. In 1956, San Marcos flourished when the town secured water from the Colorado River.  San Marcos was incorporated as a city in 1963. Its neighbors are the city of Escondido, Encinitas, Carlsbad and Vista.
