San Marcos, California is a city located in the foothills of Northern San Diego County. According to the 2022, United States Census Bureau, San Marcos’s estimated population is 94,854. San Marcos was created on part of the Rancho Vallecitos de San Marcos land grant.  The name San Marcos translated from the Spanish means “St. Mark.”   In 1887,  The San Marcos Land Company purchased a large part of the original San Marcos land grant and apportioned the land into lots for future homeowners.  In 1887, the Santa Fe Railroad laid tracts a mile from the center of San Marcos’ town. San Marcos’ economy in the 1800s was agricultural, and in the 1900s its economy expanded to dairy and poultry farms.

San Marco’s has a total area of 24.4 square miles. In 1956, San Marcos flourished when the town secured water from the Colorado River.  San Marcos was incorporated as a city in 1963. Its neighbors are the city of Escondido, Encinitas, Carlsbad and Vista.

San Marcos is home to Palomar College and California State University San Marcos. In 1989, the State of California decided to build a new University in San Marcos which expanded the population and economic development in the area.
