SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

San Rafael, is a city in Northern California in Marin County. The town of San Rafael was incorporated on February 18, 1874, and became the County Seat for Marin County in 1893. The 2022, U.S. Census estimates San Rafael’s population at 59,971 residents.  San Rafael is about 6 miles from the former Hamilton Air Force Base, 18 miles from San Francisco, 22 miles from Oakland, 28 miles from Vallejo, and 27 miles from the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

Various Miwok Tribes lived in Northen California for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived in 1775.  The indigenous residents in the San Rafael area were the Coast Miwok tribe.  The Miwoks had numerous villages throughout Marin and southern Sonoma Counties, including the Awani-Wi village near downtown San Rafael.  The Franciscan Friars at Mission San Rafael baptized many Coast Miwok natives, as well as members of the Pomo and Ohlone tribes.  Due to European diseases, military conflict and settlers’ purges the Miwok tribes were decimated and their land was stolen.

Downtown San Rafael sits in the center of the old Mission San Rafael Arcangel.  The Mission was built on December 4, 1817, by Vicente Francisco de Sarria as an asistencia (or helper) for the other missions to use as a hospital.  Mission San Rafael Arcangel became a full mission in 1822.  The city of San Rafael was named after the old Mission San Rafael Arcangel.

Mission San Rafael Arcangel was abandoned in 1844, and the buildings were demolished in 1870.  However, the Mission was reconstructed in 1949, including a replica of a small mission chapel.  The chapel is currently operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco.

San Rafael’s economy in the 19th century was agriculturally based.  In the 1800s, the land was used for raising cattle, sheep and horses.  Crops consisted of corn, herbs, berries and nuts.  In 1884, San Rafael flourished with the arrival of the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad which later became the Northwestern Pacific Railroad.  The city continued to grow with dependable access to San Francisco, including the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937.

Although a small town in Marin County, San Rafael is an urban-suburban community.  San Rafael is a charming city and has many parks and wide open spaces.  China Camp is a historic Chinese American shrimp-fishing village located five miles from downtown San Rafael and runs along the shore of San Pablo Bay.  In 1979, China Camp was placed on the National Register of Historic Places for its archaeology, architecture, commerce, settlement, and social history.  Also, San Rafael has access to Lucas Valley Open Space Preserve, where residents and tourists can hike through grassland up to the 1,800-foot Big Rock Ridge, the second-highest peak in Marin County.
