SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Santa Ana is the county seat of Orange County, in the southern part of the state of California, 30 miles south of Los Angeles.  It is located on the Santa Ana River at the base of the Santa Ana Mountains. An estimated 332,000 people make their home in Santa Ana, making it the second largest city in the county. Santa Ana was named for Saint Anne.

The city of Santa Ana has its origin in the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana land grant.  The 63,414-acre grant stretched from the Santa Ana River to the Santa Ana Mountains. It was given to Jose Antonio Yorba and his nephew Pablo Peralta by José Joaquín de Arrillaga in 1810, and was originally used for cattle grazing and agriculture.

In October, 1869 William Spurgeon purchased the land in what is now called Santa Ana.  He hired surveyor George Wright of Los Angeles to create a map of the 24-square-block town. This map was plotted in December, 1870, with boundaries on First Street on the south, Seventh Street on the north, West Street on the west, and Spurgeon Street on the east.  In 1878, the Southern Pacific Railroad connected Santa Ana to Los Angeles, leading to its growth as a transport center for regional farm produce. Santa Ana was incorporated as a city in 1886, and in 1889, became the seat of the newly formed Orange County.

During the war years, thousands of US soldiers were stationed on the West Coast, in Orange County and in Santa Ana.  At the end of the war, many soldiers returned to settle in the area, attracted by the mild climate and beautiful landscape. Between 1950 and 1960, the population grew over 120% to over 100,000. US Route 101 was upgraded to a four-lane freeway in the 1950’s, providing efficient access from Santa Ana to Los Angeles, and facilitating  commuting.  By 2020, the population of Santa Ana exceeded 300,000.

Local attractions include  the Orange County Museum of Art, the Santa Ana Zoo, and the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art featuring Native American art and regional artifacts. The Discovery Cube Orange County is a hands-on, interactive children’s science museum in Santa Ana, featuring a ten-story solar array cube  Several Fortune 500 companies have their regional headquarters in Santa Ana, including  Cherry Aerospace, ITT Cannon, and Xerox.   Also headquartered in Santa Ana are  Ducommun Incorporated – a technology-driven manufacturing company that supplies products, engineering, design and support services to the global aerospace and defense industry and  Behr Paint Company, one of the nation’s largest suppliers of architectural paint and exterior wood care products
