SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Santa Monica, is located in Southern California, in Los Angeles County.  It lies near the Santa Monica Bay and is bordered by Los Angeles city.  According to the 2022, U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population is 89,947.  Santa Monica is 16.5 miles from Los Angeles, 30 miles from Long Beach, 20.6 miles from Torrance and 28.1 miles from San Pedro, California.

The Indigenous residents of the area were the Tongva Native Americans.  The Tongva tribe inhabited approximately a 4000 mile territory in the Greater Los Angeles area.  They have also been referred to as the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe.  The Kuruvungna Springs in Santa Monica is a sacred site to the Tongva Tribe.  Currently it is preserved and protected by the Gabrielino-Tongva Springs Foundation

After Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, the Santa Monica area was divided into three land grants, the Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica, Rancho Boca de Santa Monica and Rancho La Bollona. In 1875, Colonel Robert Baker and Senator John Percival Jones developed plots for the town on Rancho Santa Monica.  Their marketing plan promoted the town as a seaside resort and they successfully sold the plots at an auction.  In 1875, Senator Jones donated Palisades Park to the city. Santa Monica was incorporated as a city in 1886.

Santa Monica has had many economic ups and downs. In 1909, it opened the famous Santa Monica pier.  And in the 1920s, Hollywood stars and wealthy East Coast families called Santa Monica their home. In 1921, Donald W. Douglas Senior founded the Douglas Aircraft Company which later became McDonnell Douglas and opened a plant in Santa Monica. The company was successful and employed thousands of people through World War II, until it closed the Santa Monica headquarters in 1975.  Mr. Douglas’s company led the way for the city’s current Aerospace and communications industries.

Santa Monica is known as a diverse and progressive city. Santa Monica is also a tourist destination, and known for its beach activities, fine restaurants, art galleries and theater. Santa Monica has famously been depicted in many TV shows and films.
