Solano County, California was founded in 1850, when California achieved statehood.  Solano County was named after Chief Solano from the Suisun people, the Native American tribe of the region and Vallejo’s close ally.  Solano County is also known for an animal theme park opened in 1968, originally named Marine World, then Marine World Africa, and now Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. The park is located in Vallejo off Interstate 80 between San Francisco and Sacramento. Other major Solano County highways are Interstate 505, Interstate 680, and  Interstate 780.

Also in Solano County is the Mare Island Naval Shipyard (“MINSY”), created in the 1850s as the country’s first naval base on the Pacific Ocean.  Mare Island was a leading submarine port and an active part of the nation’s naval efforts in the Pacific Theater in World War II.  The base was closed in 1996.
