SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

South San Francisco is in San Mateo County, on the San Francisco Peninsula.  According to the 2022 census data South San Francisco’s estimated population is 63,484.  South San Francisco has had a transformative history beginning in the mid 1800’s with agriculture, ranches and meat packing plants, in the 1920s it developed as an industrial city, with steel manufacturing facilities and later in the 1970s, it progressed as the birthplace of biotechnology, resulting in biotech and pharmaceutical companies congregated in South San Francisco.

The Ramaytush Indians a linguistic sub-group of the Ohlone Tribe were the Indigenous people in the San Francisco peninsula.  The Ramaytush and Ohlone tribes lived in the area for thousands of years before Gaspar de Portola’s 1769 expedition in the area.  The Ohlones were decimated by European diseases, the Spanish mission system’s forced labor and military and civilian conflict.

South San Francisco lies on part of a Mexican Land grant called Rancho Buri Buri that was a 15,000 acre land grant awarded to Jose Antonio Sanchez in 1827.  Subsequently, in the 1850s, Charles Lux and Henry Miller purchased large portions of the Bur Buri land grant and founded the town of Baden in 1856.  Baden in now a neighborhood in South San Francisco.

The Lux and Miller Company controlled California’s early meat industry and supplied meat to San Francisco. In the late 1800s, several large meat packing plants were located in South San Francisco and representatives of the Beef Trust promoted the town as an industrial suburb.

In 1888, Gustavus F. Swift of Swift & Company, proposed a town plan that recognized land for the respective meat packing plants, including a joint stockyard for the businesses and a residential allotment of land for the workers.  Swift proposed the name South San Francisco since the Swift Companies were already established in South Chicago and South Omaha.

In 1890, Peter Iler with Chicago meat packers Armour, Swift and others acquired Charles Lux and Millers’s original properties. In 1891, they formed the South San Francisco Land and Improvement Company with Peter Iler as general manager.  In 1892, the Improvement Company divided the land into industrial and residential areas.

In 1908, South San Francisco incorporated as a city.  Many diverse industries moved to South San Francisco, including Pacific Jupiter Steel Mill, Bethlehem Steel Mill, Fuller Paint, brick, lumber and tile companies.  In 1923, a large sign went up on a hill overlooking the city with the city’s motto “South San Francisco, The Industrial City.”

Like most of California after World War II, South San Francisco experienced a population boom and built more residential buildings.  In 1976, Genentech, the largest biotech company in the world was founded in South San Francisco and today over 200 Bio-Tech companies are based there, including 3T Biosciences, Vistagen, and GRAIL.
