Tracy is in California’s Central Valley, in San Joaquin County.  The Yatchicumne, a group of Northern Valley Yokuts people, were the initial inhabitants in the Tracy area.  The Mono tribe also lived in the Tracy area.

In the 1800s, the Central Pacific Rail Road used Chinese laborers to build rail lines running from Sacramento through Stockton to the San Francisco Bay area. The railroad developed towns, including Ellis, a coaling station at the base of the Altamont pass.  In the late 1800s, J. H. Stewart constructed a new Central Pacific Railroad Rail line that met up with the Southern Pacific Rail line, three miles east from the town of Ellis.  Where the two rail lines met, Tracy was established. J.H. Stewart named the new town after railroad Director, Lathrop J. Tracy, who lived in Mansfield, Ohio. In December 1878, the Central Pacific R.R. transferred all railroad operations to the new town of Tracy, thereby ensuring Ellis’s demise.  Tracy became a major railroad hub that continued through the1960’s when other rails closed.

In 1915, the first irrigation district ensured Tracy’s population growth and continuation with farming,  ranching and agriculture.  Since 1942, the Tracy Defense Distribution Depot has been a supply house for American troops in all major wars. Safeway and many other companies also have large distribution centers in the area. The Defense Distribution Depot, Safeway, Amazon, and Fed Ex are among the largest employers in Tracy.

Tracy is part of the greater San Francisco Bay Area and is at the center of a major highway transportation hub, as well as a suburban community for the greater Bay Area.  Tracy has experienced a massive housing growth which focuses on sustainable communities.
