TRI-VALLEY CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The Tri-Valley area is part of Alameda County, in the San Francisco Bay area of Northern California.  It consists of the San Ramon Valley, the Livermore Valley and the Amador Valley, and includes the cities of Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore.  Much of the region was originally used as grazing land for Mission San Jose herds of cattle, sheep and horses. While sharing a common heritage of farming, ranching and viticulture, today, the Tri-Valley area is largely suburban.

The population of the Tri-Valley cities has been growing rapidly in recent years. The rate of growth for the Tri-Valley population is twice that of the rest of the Bay Area, with over 360,000 people calling it home.

The 2019, census data showed Dublin was one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Today, over 70,000 people make their home in Dublin.

With over 86,000 people, Livermore is the largest city in the Tri-Valley area., Livermore host the research facilities of both the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Sandia National Laboratories.

Pleasanton, a city of 80,421 people, hosts the Alameda County Fair.

Long before the Spanish arrived in California, thousands of Ohlone inhabited the Tri-Valley area, sustained by the mild climate and plentiful acorns, nuts, seeds and wild game. Many of the tribes lived in the shadow of Mt. Diablo and the mountain was a sacred site to them.

DUBLIN

Nearly two hundred years ago,  Dublin sat at the crossroads of two important stagecoach routes -one from the Bay Area to Stockton and one from Martinez to San Jose.  Located by a fresh water source, the Alamilla Springs, it was a natural spot for the travelers to rest.

In 1850, Michael Murray and Jeremiah Fallon came to the area from Ireland. They purchased 1,000 acres of land and built homes for their families.  Subsequently, the area became known as Dublin because of the presence of so many Irish immigrants.

Dublin is home to the headquarters for Patelco Credit Union, Ross Stores Callidus Cloud, TriNet, Medley Health, and the Challenge Dairy.  Dublin is also the site of Santa Rita Jail, the third largest jail in California.

LIVERMORE

Livermore sprung from the ranch of Robert Livermore and his family.  It is home to the oldest family run winery in America, Wente Vineyards.  Deposits of coal, oil deposits, gravel and sand provided early opportunities for Livermore’s economic development.

In 1942, the US government built the Livermore Naval Air Station. After World War II,  the  facility was transferred to the Atomic Energy Association. It is now the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory.  In 1956 Sandia National Laboratories opened a facility as well. Both research facilities continue to operate today.

PLEASANTON

The Pleasanton area was first settled by Augustine Bernal in 1850. His adobe house is still standing today.

The climate, the soil and the numerous creeks and streams attracted ranchers, farmers and wine makers. The area became famous for its hops, which were exported across the globe. In the early 1900’s  Pleasanton’s hop fields covered 2,000 acres, and supplied the Guinness Brewery in Ireland.  The gravel industry has also been a mainstay of the local economy for many years.

In 1982, ground was broken on Pleasanton’s Hacienda Business Park. Now at 875 acres, Hacienda is a mixed-use development, the largest of its kind in in the region.  It hosts hundreds of companies with a total workforce of 18,000 people.
