Tulare County’s root of the name can be found in the Nahuatl Language, specifically in the word tullin, for designating cattail or similar reed.

The Tulare County region was originally populated by the Yokuts, Western Mono or Monache and Tubatulabal people. These tribes are known and federally recognized native Americans as the Tule River Reservation located next to the river in Tulare County, and before they were called Tule River Farm.

Tulare County has been recognized for its production of milk, as one of the largest agricultural-producing counties in the world and number one in the state of California, as well as in the United States. The city of Tulare is also known for its annually World Ag Expo – the largest farm equipment show in the world. Tulare County’s  richness also extends to a good number of state parks, rivers, national protected areas (Sequoia National Park included), mountains, lakes, and flora.
