TULARE, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Tulare, is a city in Tulare County, California. In 1852, Tulare was granted County status. In 1872, the town of Tulare was settled.  Tulare was incorporated as a city on April 5, 1888.  Tulare is situated roughly at the halfway point between Los Angeles and San Francisco.  Tulare is 8 miles from Visalia, 60 miles from Bakersfield, 174.5 miles from Los Angeles and 232 miles from San Francisco.

The Indigenous residents in and around Tulare were the Yokut people.  Tulare County was home to the Yokuts and Western Mono Native Americans.  These two groups settled along the Kaweah and Tule rivers.  They shared a common language and culture. Indigenous Indian Tribes were decimated by disease, servitude and conflict.  The remaining Yokuts were forced by the settlers on to reservations.

Tulare is in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley and is named after Tulare Lake.  Tulare Lake used to be the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi until it dried up in the late 1800s. Diversion of rivers flowing into the Tulare Lake for agriculture use and municipal water use resulted in Tulare Lake withering away.

However, with California’s 2022, Atmospheric River phenomenon and winter storms, Tulare Lake is currently back with an astounding amount of water in the once-dead lake.  Tulare Lake is predicted to stay in place for about two years.

In 1872, Tulare began as a Southern Pacific Railroad settlement.  However, the Southern Pacific Railroad moved its depot to Bakersfield in 1891, which was detrimental to Tulare.  The city of Tulare founded the Tulare Irrigation District which brought water to the area and led to the development of an immensely successful agriculture community.

Tulare now lies in the most productive agricultural land in the world and it also has successful food processors and distributors in the area.  Tulare presently has effective infrastructure for transportation and the Union Pacific Railroad runs right through Tulare.  Tulare also has access to major highways and airports to facilitate its agricultural products movement.
