TURLOCK, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Turlock is the second largest city in Stanislaus County, California.  It is located in the southern region of the San Joaquin Valley near the Tuolumne River.  According to the 2022 Census Data there are over 72,000 residents.  The city of Turlock was founded in 1871, but not incorporated as a city until 1908.

The Laquisimne (Lakisamni) tribe of the Yokut people are indigenous to the area. The Yokuts had large villages, and their diet consisted of seeds, acorns, small game and fish from the San Joaquin Valley.

Turlock was founded by John William Mitchell on December 22, 1871. John Mitchell was a prominent leader, farmer and owner of large herds of cattle and sheep. John Mitchell and his brother subsequently owned over 100,000 acres farmed through the tenant system. In the 1850s, John Mitchell was instrumental in bringing the Southern Pacific Railroad to Turlock which transported freight and passengers into the area. In 1901, the completion of the Turlock irrigation District allowed the Valley to expand farming efforts and produce a variety of fruits, and enlarge poultry and dairy farms. Turlock also had food processing plants.

Turlock has been renowned for its agricultural economy and still produces almonds, walnuts, peaches, beans, and cherries.  In addition, it is an important national supplier of chickens, eggs, milk, and turkeys.  Turlock also has incorporated warehousing and light manufacturing industries into its economy.  In addition, with the 1990 housing crunch in California, Turlock has become a bedroom community for the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Turlock is home to California State University, Stanislaus which was established in 1957.  The Princeton Review has ranked the California State University, Stanislaus among the best colleges in the nation.  Turlock is the gateway for historic sites in the Motherlode Country and Turlock Lake State Recreational area within its city.
