Tustin Mesothelioma

TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Tustin is located in southern California, in Orange County, CA.  It is 34.6 miles from the Port of Los Angeles, 30 miles from Long Beach and 35.9 miles from Torrance, CA.  According to the 2022 U.S. census data, an estimated 78,418 people make their home in Tustin.

The indigenous Acjachemen Tribes were in Southern CA, and Orange County for thousands of years before the Spaniards’ 1769 expedition.  The  Acjachemen territory stretched from Las Pulgas Creek in San Diego county up into the San Joaquin Hills along Orange County’s Central Coast, and inland from the Pacific Ocean up to the Santa Ana Mountains.  When the Spanish Friars established Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, the Friars named the indigenous Acjachemen natives “Juaneno.” The Juaneno- Acjachemen natives’ labor made the Mission prosperous.

The city of Tustin sits on a portion of the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, which was originally part of a 62,500 acre Spanish land grant awarded in 1801, to José Antonio Yorba.  In 1868, when the old Spanish land grant, including Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana was partitioned for sale, Columbus Tustin and his partner, N.O. Stafford purchased 1300 acres of the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana.  From 1868 to 1872, Columbus Tustin subdivided the land and plotted the site for “Tustin” city.  He had a difficult time selling the lots and eventually offered lots for free to anyone who would build a home in Tustin.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Tustin’s economy was agriculturally based which included farm land, groves of apricots, walnuts and later oranges.  In the 1880s, there was a construction boom that included three churches, a large 50 room hotel, a bank and a horse drawn trolley line that connected Tustin to Santa Ana. In 1927, Tustin was incorporated as a city.

During World War II, thousands of US soldiers were stationed on the West Coast, and in Orange County.  At that time, Tustin was home to the Marine Corps Air Station which subsequently closed in July 1999. The former Marine base was annexed to Tustin, increasing the city’s land by 2,076 acres. At the end of the WWII, many soldiers returned to settle in the area, which increased the City’s population and enhanced suburban growth.

Tustin is situated in Central Orange County, and is bordered by Santa Ana, Irvine and North Tustin. It has swift access to transportation routes, as the Santa Ana Freeway (I-5) runs through the city, and the Costa Mesa Freeway (SR-55) is at the western edge of the city.  It is also, two miles from John Wayne Airport.
