UPLAND, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

The city of Upland is part of the Inland Empire in Southern California, in San Bernardino County. It was previously known as North Ontario, until it incorporated in 1906.  Upland borders Los Angeles County and is 36 miles from Los Angeles proper.  According to the 2022 U.S. census data Upland’s population is estimated at 78,841 residents.

The indigenous people were the Tongva Indians who settled in the Upland/Ontario region thousands of years before the Europeans arrived. Upland lies on an east-west trail used by the Native Americans for centuries and today is known as the “Old Spanish Trail.

In 1810, the Spaniards established the Mission of San Gabriel Archangel.  The Spaniards named the area around Upland “Cucamonga.”  In 1839, the Mexican government granted Rancho Cucomonga to Tiburcio Tapia.

Beginning in 1882, George Chaffey and his brother ultimately purchased over 8000 acres of the Cucamonga Rancho and water rights from the San Antonio Creek.  Chaffey established the Ontario Model Colony Development and Upland at the time was known as “North Ontario.”  The Model Colony provided land buyers with shares in the San Antonio Water Company.

Ontario was incorporated as a city in 1891. In 1906, North Ontario broke away, incorporated as a city and became Upland, California. Charles D. Adams, president of the “Upland Citrus Association” is recognized with selecting “Upland” as the town’s name.

Upland and Ontario became well known for dairy farming and an agricultural economy, including a variety of fruit trees and extensive citrus groves.  The Upland/Ontario area was rated the second largest citrus acreage in the state.

After WWII, an influx of military and civilian workers settled in the Upland/Ontario area.  The citrus groves and farmland gave way to residential development. A portion of Upland was formerly part of the historic U.S. Route 66.  Traces of Route 66 can be seen on Foothill Blvd. in Upland, including an original McDonalds and a Buffalo Inn.
