The city of Upland is part of the Inland Empire in Southern California, in San Bernardino County. It was previously known as North Ontario, until it incorporated in 1906. Chaffey established the Ontario Model Colony Development and Upland at the time was known as “North Ontario.” The Model Colony provided land buyers with shares in the San Antonio Water Company.
Ontario was incorporated as a city in 1891. In 1906, North Ontario broke away, incorporated as a city and became Upland, California. Charles D. Adams, president of the “Upland Citrus Association” is recognized with selecting “Upland” as the town’s name.
Upland and Ontario became well known for dairy farming and an agricultural economy, including a variety of fruit trees and extensive citrus groves. The Upland/Ontario area was rated the second largest citrus acreage in the state.
