VISTA, CALIFORNIA OVERVIEW

Vista, California is city in San Diego County. According to the 2022 United States Census Bureau, Vista’s estimated population is 97,766. Although inland, Vista is 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean.  Vista is 42.3 miles from San Diego, 84.2 miles from Long Beach, 92 miles from Los Angeles, and 93 miles from the United States-Mexican border. While the tracts for the town were drawn in 1886, Vista was not formally incorporated as a city until 1963.

Vista and San Diego County are the ancestral home of the Kumeyaay people that generally encompass the Diegueno, Tapai and Ipai tribes.  Other tribes that made their home in the area, include the Cupeno, the Luiseño, and Cahuilla Indians.  In 1798, the Catholic Church established San Luis Rey de Francia, the 18th mission in California, near the city of Vista.  It was the largest and richest mission in California, with cattle and abundant crops of corn, grapes, beans and wheat. The San Luis Rey de Francia mission’s church is still in use today.

Vista was created on parts of two land grants, Rancho Buena Vista and Rancho Guajome.  In 1842, the first post office was built, and the region was named Vista, which translates into “the view.”  In 1886, the Vista Land Co. created tracts for the town.  Vista’s economy in the 1800’s, was agricultural and ranching.

Vista flourished in 1926, when the Vista Irrigation District secured Lake Henshaw and ensured a consistent water supply for the town. Vista’s crops grew exponentially while growing tomatoes, celery, lemons, citrus groves and avocados. In the 1940’s, Vista was known for producing vast magnitudes of avocados.

World War II and the later aerospace industry’s growth in nearby San Diego increased Vista’s population and residential development.  Vista is a suburban community with a reasonable commute to San Diego.  Vista is home to many companies, including DJO, Belkin, DEI Holdings and Datron World Communications.
